Our Philosophy

“Humans are a part of nature, not apart from nature.”

— Mark Bekoff

We recognize our work as gardeners has a direct impact on the surrounding ecosystem. We strive to improve our environmental neighborhood while also creating and maintaining a garden that meets the needs of our clients.

  • Plant Selection

We are experienced in plant selections that will create a beautiful garden. Time and time again, native plants are proven to be the powerhouses of cultivating healthy ecosystems. Therefore we strive to incorporate as many plants native to the Piedmont of NC. However, there are many times the conditions we are working in are no longer native environments, or the goals of the client do not match those that native plants could meet. We can help educate you in what will work best for your conditions.

  • Chemical Usage

One reason we are classified as fine gardeners is we use our hands to maintain your garden. We spend a lot of our time on our hands and knees weeding to eliminate the need for chemical usage. But we also subscribe to the adage “Use the right tool for the right job”. There are occasions where we recommend using pre-emergent and selective use of spray herbicides. We will communicate with you about your wishes for your garden.

We employ organic fertilizers unless we are tending annuals where we mix Miracle Gro with kelp, an organic fertilizer.

  • Sustainable Practices

As fine gardeners, most of our work is with hand tools. We prefer not to work with gas-powered equipment if possible. Many times you’ll see us raking before a final blow off with an electric blower.

Many plant containers from nurseries are not recyclable. We prefer to reuse them or give them back to suppliers who can reuse them.

As a woman-owned business, we are proud to bank with Self Help Credit Union. Investing our money in a local bank helps build financial sustainability in our community.

  • Further Education

We invite you to learn more about our natural spaces and how we can reinvest in ourselves.
